The Process of Healing-HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

I asked each of you what you do, say or think when a problem occurs that would explain how a healing would occur. Some you responded that you would “handle the fear”. Others said they would “know the truth.” Another answer was to see ourselves as God’s reflection. Well, those are all answers we have heard before and they would have varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the understanding we had at the time. Generally, however, those answers are just words and we have learned to say as Christian Scientists and have little or no effect on the outcome. What we really need to do is understand the scientific process and follow specific instructions with regard to effective and immediate healing.

In this weeks lesson we were given just such an instruction in one sentence. Here it is from page 185:32 of our textbook:

“A patient under the influence of mortal mind is healed only by removing the influence on him of this mind, by emptying his thought of the false stimulus and reaction of will-power and filling it with the divine energies of Truth.”

Let’s take apart the sentence. Mrs. Eddy gives us two steps in removing the influence of mortal mind and thus be healed. The first step is the emptying step and the second is the filling step. The emptying step has two phases: (1) emptying thought of the false stimulus of will-power and (2) emptying thought of the reaction of will-power to the false stimulus. It is not enough to say that there is no matter or that matter or error is not real. We understand that to be true but what we really mean is that matter and error have no power or influence upon or spiritual identity.

Do you have two bodies: one that is material and the other that is spiritual. No! You only have one body. But, you have two concepts of body, one material and one spiritual. Thus we need to change our concept of our body not change our body. We must spiritualize our viewpoint. Then the body must respond with Mind’s expression of form, outline, beauty, quality, quantity, color, strength, health and so on. Mrs. Eddy says these qualities are mental. When we see beautiful matter we are really seeing Spirit’s dominion over matter and beauty and order are the result. We couldn’t see beautiful matter because matter has no power to express anything, good or bad.

Thus, we must start the healing process by identifying what it is in our thought that is being falsely stimulated by will-power. Next, knowing that it is will-power and false we must not react to it. This process is told to us several times in the Bible. Job said, “I never knew you, depart from me ye workers of iniquity”; Jesus said, “Get thee behind me Satan.”; and Paul said to “ cast down imaginations and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”.

Now that we are not reacting to will-power and those false stimuli we are ready for the second step—the filling step. This is where the definition of Christ come in. 583:10:

“CHRIST. The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error. “

Mind is expressing divine thoughts. Those thoughts are not just ideas that come to you, there are you. God is thinking you right now, and now, and now and yes, even now. Recognizing our spiritual nature is witnessing the Christ, God’s manifestation, the truth about you. Submission to the Christ, recognition of your spiritual identity, affirmation of the spiritual facts and nature of your being creates a receptive state for the Christ, its divine energy to resonate in you.

The Christ is like the light. Remember my story about the light ray that came to the puddle of water and evaporated it. It got right down into the water to remove it but never knew of the water or touched the water. The water had no influence or power to the light. Her is what our Leader says about light: S&H 510:27

Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love, and not a vitalizing property of matter. Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony. This Mind forms ideas, its own images, subdivides and radiates their borrowed light, intelligence, and so explains the Scripture phrase, "whose seed is in itself." Thus God's ideas "multiply and replenish the earth." The divine Mind supports the sublimity, magnitude, and infinitude of spiritual creation.

Each idea, each of you is being expressed right now by Mind. You are the light.

Now here is a great benediction for today:

Prov 3:21-26
My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

One last point that we did not cover in class. This sentence was also in the lesson and shows the same two steps. Emptying and filling is another way of saying denying and affirming. We deny the nothingness of matter and affirm the allness of God, good. Remember these two cardinal points:

52:19-23
The "man of sorrows" best understood the nothingness of material life and intelligence and the mighty actuality of all-inclusive God, good. These were the two cardinal points of Mind-healing, or Christian Science, which armed him with Love.
