Tell the truth regarding the lie!

Mrs. Eddy took strong stands against the prevailing views of her day. She stove to lift humanity higher and she took on the most respected thinkers: Darwin, Twain and Mesmer in Germany (The originator of the concept of Mesmerism. She fought hard against the tough issues of slavery, women’s suffrage, use of atomic force, medicine, the Pulpit, the press. She was widely respected by Presidents, Popes, by Albert Einstein and Susan B. Anthony (who actually had class instruction). She never hesitated at identifying Truth and where needed in identifying a lie. Here are just a few examples:

226:5
The voice of God in behalf of the African slave was still echoing in our land, when the voice of the herald of this new crusade sounded the keynote of universal freedom, asking a fuller acknowledgment of the rights of man as a Son of God, demanding that the fetters of sin, sickness, and death be stricken from the human mind and that its freedom be won, not through human warfare, not with bayonet and blood, but through Christ's divine Science.
63:12
Civil law establishes very unfair differences between the rights of the two sexes. Christian Science furnishes no precedent for such injustice, and civilization mitigates it in some measure. Still, it is a marvel why usage should accord woman less rights than does either Christian Science or civilization.
587:3
GIHON (river). The rights of woman acknowledged morally, civilly, and socially.
547:17
Briefly, this is Darwin's theory, — that Mind produces its opposite, matter, and endues matter with power to recreate the universe, including man. Material evolution implies that the great First Cause must become material, and afterwards must either return to Mind or go down into dust and nothingness.
100:1-6
Mesmerism or animal magnetism was first brought into notice by Mesmer in Germany in 1775. According to the American Cyclopaedia, he regarded this so-called force, which he said could be exerted by one living organism over another, as a means of alleviating disease.
101:21
The author's own observations of the workings of animal magnetism convince her that it is not a remedial agent, and that its effects upon those who practise it, and upon their subjects who do not resist it, lead to moral and to physical death.
236:2
Truth should emanate from the pulpit, but never be strangled there. A special privilege is vested in the ministry. How shall it be used? Sacredly, in the interests of humanity, not of sect.

Last week I gave you the following riddle to solve:

There is a "Y" in the road. One way leads to a fire-breathing dragon. The other way leads to safety. There are two Indians standing at the Y. One always tells the truth and one always lies. You are allowed only one question. You can ask it of either Indian. What is the question to ask that will tell you with 100% surety the road to safety?

Answer: “What will the other Indian say if I ask him which is the road to safety?” (Then take the opposite road.) Let’s follow the logic. Since you don’t know which Indian is a liar and which is truthful you must ask a question that will produce the same answer. In math when you multiply a positive number by a negative the answer is always negative. That is what our answer does. It interjects a lie into the answer so the answer must be wrong. If you are asking the honest Indian what the dishonest Indian will say the safe road is he will tell you honestly what the liar will say. So, you take the other road. If, instead you were talking tot he dishonest Indian he will tell you what the honest one would say but he would lie about it. Again take the opposite road.

The riddle is profound. Matter always tells a lie. Spirit always tells the truth. But you can’t tell them apart because matter counterfeits Spirit. (Else it won’t be believed.) And in life you usually only get one opportunity to decide what to do in a particular situation. When making decisions it is imperative to tell the truth regarding the lie. To this you must start with the scientific fact you are learning in Christian Science. It’s really quite easy. Does the answer glorify God or you? Is it selfish or selfless? Is your decision motivated by fear, ignorance or human will?
And, if the decision is between two choices that both appear to be good, which do you choose. Let’s go to our Leader to find out. Believe it our not she advises us to trust our first instincts, especially when it comes to people.
S&H 449
The baneful effect of evil associates is less seen than felt. The inoculation of evil human thoughts ought to be understood and guarded against. The first impression, made on a mind which is attracted or repelled according to personal merit or demerit, is a good detective of individual character. Certain minds meet only to separate through simultaneous repulsion. They are enemies without the preliminary offence. The impure are at peace with the impure.

If you still can’t decide what to do, go back to the books and get your thought elevated higher. One of the choices will feel more comfortable with the higher, inspired altitude of your thinking. The other will feel less comfortable until it falls away.

You must stay alert. Look for good, identify good, cherish the good. Good is God and God is good. Good is God spelled with two “o”s! In the Sixth Tenet there are six commands. The first one is to solemnly promise to watch……!

497:24
6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

Along this line there is an especially interesting and profound article called WATCHING versus WATCHING OUT (My 232). It is a comment by Mrs. Eddy on an Editorial which Appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel, September 23, 1905

Our Lord and Master left to us the following sayings as living lights in our darkness: "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch" (Mark 13 : 37); and, "If the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through." (Luke 12 : 39.)
Here we ask: Are Christ's teachings the true authority for Christian Science? They are. Does the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," read on page 252, "A knowledge of error and of its operations must precede that understanding of Truth which destroys error, until the entire mortal, material error finally disappears, and the eternal verity, man created by and of Spirit, is understood and recognized as the true likeness of his Maker"? It does. If so-called watching produces fear or exhaustion and no good results, does that watch accord with Jesus' saying? It does not. Can watching as Christ demands harm you? It cannot. Then should not "watching out" mean, watching against a negative watch, alias, no watch, and gaining the spirit of true watching, even the spirit of our Master's command? It must mean that.
Is there not something to watch in yourself, in your daily life, since "by their fruits ye shall know them," which prevents an effective watch? Otherwise, wherefore the Lord's Prayer, "Deliver us from evil"? And if this something, when challenged by Truth, frightens you, should you not put that out instead of putting out your watch? I surely should. Then are you not made better by watching? I am. Which should we prefer, ease or dis-ease in sin? Is not discomfort from sin better adapted to deliver mortals from the effects of belief in sin than ease in sin? and can you demonstrate over the effects of other people's sins by indifference thereto? I cannot.

Several weeks ago you were given a leadership assignment. It was to raise the level of conversation in a social setting. You were asked to identify grand and noble character traits in the person you were talking to and publicly recognize them somehow in the conversation. This was to be done whenever you felt the conversation going downhill. It requires watching or watching out for good. Keep doing it. See if you don’t become the leader in that situation and raise the atmosphere for everyone involved.

Remember, you are not identifying or uncovering evil in someone else (that would be impossible anyway) and you are certainly not responsible for pointing out errors about others publicly. You are only responsible for the quality and purity of your own thought. Your mission is to reject the lie and not to let it enter your thought at all. Look at
Mis 204:23-27
By purifying human thought, this state of mind permeates with increased harmony all the minutiae of human affairs. It brings with it wonderful foresight, wisdom, and power; it unselfs the mortal purpose, gives steadiness to resolve, and success to endeavor.

When you are tempted to judge falsely your friends or to make a decision you know is mediocre or that is settling for 2nd best then mentally do the following:

448:9 (to 2nd .)
When needed tell the truth concerning the lie.

Mentally say to yourself of the intruding false thought (not person) what Luke did in chapter 13 of his gospel: “Depart from me ye workers of iniquity. Here is the whole quote…

Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
